Shop Stop ~ Buy Hand

Posted by on Feb 10, 2012 in Shops | 0 comments

Who are you?

My name is Elle. I am a 25 yr old single mum who has always been creative but only got in the world of craft and handmade in 2009 after bub was born. It has since consumed my life and become my work and passion.

What will we find in your shop?

Two great businesses are now in the one location so if you come in you can find fresh contemporary fabrics, and both new and vintage buttons and trims from Pompom Rouge. My store Buy Hand stocks unique handmade products from around Australia, including Bespoke and I am very excited to say we soon also be stocking Epheriell Jewelry!

What’s your favourite thing in your shop right this minute?

Oh that’s a bit like asking a mother of 3 to pick a favorite child. . .but if I had to come up with something it would be the beautiful Helveticus Bags we stock. These are handmade in Switzerland by a small family of cobblers. Each bag is made of original Swiss Army blankets that have been stockpiled for up to 100 years, but never used. Even the leather comes from belts and straps – only the hardware (zips etc) are new.

What sort of products are you on the hunt for?

I love unique and quality products that have been handmade. Past that there is no restriction – at the moment I am just working on stocking some organic skin care products. I am keen to support anything small and independent too, such as zines, books and musicians. Its all about the little people really.

Can you sum up the feel of your shop in 3 words?

Vintage, colorful and eclectic. If I had four words I would say coffee too because we drink an awful lot of it.

Where can we find your shop?

As I mentioned, I am lucky enough to share my shop with another crafty business, Pompom Rouge and its very talented owner Kirsty. We love working together and would be thrilled if you stopped by and say hello. We are located in Blackwood Strreet, in Townsville’s city centre.
You can also buy our yummy products online at www.buyhand.com.au. Be sure to keep stopping by because I will be adding more products all the time over the next few months.

Thanks for being a *bespoke* stockist, Buy Hand!

Shop Stop ~ I Heart Gallery

Posted by on Nov 18, 2011 in Shops | 0 comments

Who are you?

I Heart Gallery is essentially an indoor market bazaar and gallery. Half art gallery, half op shop we are a young, vibrant, unique store with a surreal sense of humour and love of the bizarre. Put together by a ragtag bunch of misfits, artists, crafters and hoarders, I Heart Gallery is FOR artists, BY artists and completely run by volunteers. We understand what it means to struggle to pay for your own materials, let alone trying to pay for gallery space, a market stall or expensive consignment store as well, so we offer fellow artists a more affordable venue to showcase and sell their work. One day we hope to expand our current store into an outdoor markets, art gallery and hold regular events such as culture jams, pop up exhibitions, crafternoons, lessons etc. Our dream is to promote creativity, passion, vision and a sense of community in our little world!

What will we find in your shop?

At I Heart Gallery you’ll find unique hand made items like crochet button rings, vintage button cuffs, sugar skull barbie hairclips, strawberry origami LED light strings, comic book badges, Alice In Wonderland pillows, posters and badges, cassette tape notebooks, felt badges, crayon necklaces, cards, jewellery, accessories & gifts of all kinds.

You’ll find amazing original artworks (at amazingly cheap prices I might add!) like completely hand cut papercuts by Paper Kitschen, original watercolour pinups  by Skullmonkey and enormous abstract paintings by Hey Stella designs.

You’ll find vintage items like cameras, Remington typewriters, portable record players, sewing machines, books, records, even mint in box, sealed Vinnie Barbarino (from Welcome Back Kotter) paper dolls! We also stock a whole bunch of vintage and 2nd hand clothing. Some embellished and upcycled with pretty ruffles, tassles, lace and doilies!

Ultimately it’s up to our many stockists what will end up at I Heart Gallery. It’s like an ever changing gallery of unique and amazing items and it makes us amazingly happy to be surrounded by such creativity. We’re the perfect place to find a unique, one of a kind gift while at the same time supporting local artists.

What’s your favourite thing in your shop right this minute?

There’s almost too many favourites to choose from! I am SO tempted to buy the Remington typewriter for my very own…I’d love to use it as a permanent display piece and to type zines with. My second favourite is MSunflowers’ altered vintage photographs – the laser rainbow panda photographer is hilarious!

What sort of products are you on the hunt for?

Everything art, craft and vintage. We love quirky and unique hand made art and craft, and especially love it when our stockists say they have been turned away from other places for being too strange. Bring on the weird and the wonderful I say! Currently there are gaps in our market for people who make manly-man stock, and things other than awesome accessories. We have wall, rack, and shelf space available to rent for only $10 a week! We also stock locally made zines, CDs and stickers on consignment.

Can you sum up the feel of your shop in 3 words?

Unique, creative, community.

Where can we find your shop?

We are in the heart of the Inner West, smack bang in between Newtown and St Peters, at 643 King St. Right across from Sydney Park, right next to St Peters station, right around the corner from May Lane graffiti gallery, and surrounded by the most creative community in Sydney! Our area has more artists per capita than any suburb I know and every customer who comes in just loves the unique items they find.

You can also join us on:

facebook: http://www.facebook.com/iheartgallery
twitter: http://twitter.com/I_Heart_Gallery
tumblr: http://i-heart-gallery.tumblr.com

and one day soon we’ll have an online store here: http://www.iheartgallery.com which coincidentally is where you can download our application form!

What will we find in your shop?

As a proudly independent bookshop, we stock the very best new and classic books, CDs, DVDs, cards and giftware. Best of all we have a staff of ravenous readers who you can always rely on for a great recommendation. Our cafe serves West End’s consistently best coffee, as well as a great selection of house-made sandwiches, salads, soups and sweet treats! Our famous back deck is perfect for lounging with a coffee and a book, as well as playing host to one of our many author events. You’ll always find a creative person nestled somewhere in the store. Indeed, many of our staff past and present are published authors themselves!

What’s your favourite thing in your shop right this minute?

Do we have to choose just one thing? Right this minute, we’re drying our eyes after reading Jackie French’s astonishing book “Flood”, a heartbreaking and heartwarming picture book about the recent Queensland Floods. All profits from the book will go to the QLD Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. It’s also illustrated by the incomparable Bruce Whatley.

What sort of products are you on the hunt for?

One of the things we’re most proud of here at Avid is having books on our shelves that you won’t find anywhere else. Quite apart from the best new releases from Australian publishers, our staff are constantly combing our favourite literary blogs and websites, as well as chatting with our bookselling and author buddies all over the world, to bring you your next great read!
